If you see castles, volcanoes, mermaids and more appearing at Hanalei Bay, it must be the first Saturday in August.
They’re the eye-catching creations of some 250 amateur sand sculptors who participate in the Hawaii Sand Festival.
Thousands more come to admire the work of both visitors and local residents who register for the event as individuals or teams of any age and number.
Contestants can use only sand, water, sprayers and hand tools such as rakes, shovels and trowels to build their magnum opus.
Molds are allowed as long as they’re removed before judging takes place.
Many participants pick up great tips during a sand-sculpting lesson taught by Jeff Peterson, a licensed contractor who co-founded the festival in 2010.
One of his most important recommendations: Be patient! By mid afternoon, about 100 sculptures have been completed, creating a giant — albeit temporary — art gallery on the shores of Hanalei Bay.
Prizes are awarded to the best creations in three categories: children (under 12 years old), youth (ages 12 to 17) and adult (18 and older).
