Situated below the Haleakala cloud line, the Waihou Spring Trail Loop is one of Upcountry Maui’s hidden gems that offers up a family-friendly excursion.
The hiking trail forms a circuit that takes visitors through a forest populated by cypress, eucalyptus and native Hawaiian koa trees. The loop winds across gradually-sloped terrain and its upper section opens to a lookout point at which hikers can observe the picturesque North Shore of Maui. For more experienced adventurers, the lower trail snakes down to Waihou Spring, which over the years has carved out a tranquil grotto sheltered by the natural canopy provided by the surrounding forest.
As a reminder, the lower portion of the hike is a bit more challenging, so children or those lacking hiking and climbing experience are advised to use extreme caution. The upper portion of the trail is suitable for all ages and parking is available at the trail head.
