Native Hawaiians revered kalo, or taro, not only as a life-giving food, but also as a spiritual brother of mankind.
For more than two decades, the remote town of Hana and surrounding communities have gathered to enjoy and celebrate this essential Hawaiian plant at the East Maui Taro Festival.
From the traditional poi to fluffy taro pancakes, every food booth offers a chance to sample kalo in its many forms.
The festival also features Hawaiian music, hula performances, agricultural exhibits, cultural demonstrations, and a craft fair, making it one of the biggest events of the year in sleepy East Maui.
