When you drive back down Haleakala after watching the sun rise, your first stop should be Komoda Bakery in Makawao.
They’re known for their rich cream puffs and guava-filled malasadas (Portuguese doughnuts), but all of their pastries are outstanding.
The bakery has been run by Tazeko Komoda’s family since he started it in 1916 (the recipes were actually created by Ikuo, one of his five sons).
Just remember, they’re closed on Wednesdays. And go early, as they usually sell out by noon.
