The Hawaii Children’s Discovery Center is a 45,000-square-foot playground full of fun interactive exhibits and the laughter and chatter of youngsters.
Five permanent galleries turn playtime into valuable educational experiences, inviting little ones to learn big lessons about their body, the environment, how a community works, different countries and cultures, and the things that make living in Hawaii special. All props are kid-size, and touching is not only okay, it’s encouraged.
Children can put on a white doctor’s coat and listen to their “patients’” heartbeats with a stethoscope. They can don costumes, step on stage and be the star of a TV show. They can participate in a Japanese tea ceremony, change tires on a car in a mechanic’s garage and, sitting in the pilot’s seat, bring a Hawaiian Airlines jet in for a landing. Lynne’s Library honors Lynne Waihee, former First Lady of Hawaii, a champion of literacy. Furnished with pillows, stuffed animals, faux fireplaces, cushioned benches, a giant armchair and, of course, dozens of books, this cozy nook is ideal for family bonding.
Open Tuesday-Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Monday
