Long ago, Hawaiian chiefs were trained in the arts of war in the lush area now known as Kualoa. In 1850, King Kamehameha III sold 622 acres of land there to one of his advisors, Gerritt P. Judd, a missionary doctor.
Today, Kualoa is a working farm and cattle ranch that meanders over 4,000 acres. It has remained in the hands of Judd’s descendants for six generations; they are committed to preserving its beauty and cultural and historical significance.
Fun guided eco-tours go to many locations seen in the 50-plus movies and TV shows that have been filmed at Kualoa since the 1950s, including Jurassic Park. Reserve a full day for a visit; there’s that much to do. For example, go horseback riding, drive an ATV, cruise around an 800-year-old fishpond in a catamaran. Paddle a canoe; rumble through a rainforest in a four-wheel-drive vehicle; stroll through gardens of fruit trees and fragrant flowers.
The newest offering is a zipline tour that features 14 tandem lines ranging from 200 feet to a quarter mile in length.
