Aloha Festivals began in 1946 as Aloha Week—seven days of events and activities revolving around Hawaii’s music, dance, customs and history.
Fifty years later, it’s still going strong. If you’re in Waikiki in September, check out these three uniquely Hawaiian, can’t-miss events.
- During the Royal Court Investiture and Opening Ceremony, Aloha Festivals’ king, queen, prince and princess receive the cloak, feather lei, and other symbols of their role to preside over the celebration, which then officially opens with chants and hula performances.
- At the Waikiki Hoolaulea, Hawaii’s largest block party, thousands of people stroll along Kalakaua Avenue, enjoying great food and entertainment.
- The Aloha Festivals Floral Parade goes from Ala Moana Beach Park, down Kalakaua Avenue to Kapiolani Park. Floats, marching bands, hula dancers and beautifully attired horseback units representing Hawaii’s major islands. Fabulous photo opportunity!
You can show your support by buying an Aloha Festivals ribbon and wearing it with true Hawaiian pride.
