Hawaii boasts a variety of colored sand beaches including gold, green and red.
But the Big Island is best known for its black sand beaches, thanks to the constant volcanic activity on the island.
Located on the southeastern Kau coast is Punaluu Black Sand Beach, arguably one of the most famous black sand beaches in the state.
Surrounding the beach are coconut trees that contrast the obsidian shoreline.
If you’re lucky, you’ll see large Hawaiian green sea turtles basking on the beach here.
