If nothing else, go to Hawaii Island to see two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea, which are still adding land mass.
Aside from the volcanic activity, the 333,000-acre park spans from the summit of Mauna Loa to the ocean, comprising 150 miles of hiking trails through volcanic craters, lava deserts and rainforests, petroglyphs, a walk-in lava tube, a still-steaming crater, and a museum.
You won’t see anything like this in the world. If you drive on your own, it’s 45 minutes from Hilo and about two hours from Kailua-Kona.
