Hilo represents one of the Big Island’s wettest areas, and fittingly, is home to the Wailuku River – the state’s longest river.
The body of water spans a divide created by lava stemming from Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa and is home to Waianuenue, also known as Rainbow Falls.
This hike is relatively simple and is less than a mile long with a very slight change in elevation throughout.
Visitors can also view part of the river within the park known as Boiling Pots, which are bowl-shaped indentations in the riverbed that churn and “boil” when heavy rains increase the water flow.
