The long-time, family-owned business calls itself, “More than a bookstore; a gathering of things Hawaiian.” That’s true, but don’t discount the books. There are classic and contemporary books on Hawaii including history, mythology, fiction, travel guides, the language, children’s books and more. The people behind the desk truly know books; ask for guidance about finding a particular type of story or reference material, and you’ll get it.
Basically Books is a great place to find interesting and unique souvenirs or gifts, too. Along with Hawaii (and worldwide) maps and nautical charts, the shop also specializes in Hawaiian music and Hawaii-oriented DVDs. The well-stocked keiki (children’s) gift section has stuffed animals, science kits, educational, and other toys, some specific to Hawaii. There are printed umbrellas, calendars, postcards, art prints, knick-knacks and items for the home. Many of the shop’s Hawaii-related gifts are locally made.
